In 2010, Spain captured the world cup by defeating the Netherlands. It was a very exciting and competitive game which was forced into overtime. Andrews Iniesta scored the winning goal after one hundred and sixteen minutes of play. This made history as the first time the country had ever claimed the cup, making it the eighth country to do so. The world cup odds were not necessarily with the team. Several favorites were eliminated in the first round.

2014 FIFA World Cup Odds
The current world cup odds are slightly better for the reigning champions. Sitting behind Brazil, Argentina and Spain, Spain currently has a thirteen to two chance of capturing the world cup. In order to achieve success, Spain will need to overcome the odds once again. All fans will be keeping an eye on the current favorite and host country, Brazil. Their squad of powerful players makes it one of the most difficult to beat.
Spain will play its first world cup game on June the 13th when they face off against the Netherlands. They’ll look to carry the feeling of victory to their next game which happens on the 23rd, when they face Australia. The current champions will attempt to pass through round one unscathed with two wins.
Spain’s Top Players
As captain of Spain’s national team and their starting goalkeeper, Iker Casillas will look to keep the opposing team from putting balls in his net. As one of the best goalkeepers in soccer, Casillas is definitely an asset for Spain. At thirty two years of age, David Villa is currently the highest goal scorer for Spain, with fifty six total. He is followed closely by the thirty year old, Fernando Torres, who has thirty six. This duo will need to make opposing goalkeepers work hard to achieve victory.
